IAPP Guidelines for Continuing Education Units

Options for Re-certification for CPP and QPP

Conferences and workshops

  • (This is the category that most individuals will get most of their CEU.)
  • One hour awarded for each hour continuing education.
  • Conferences and workshops must be directly related to ATOD Prevention, Youth Development, Coalition Building, and or Leadership Development.

Academic Courses

  • Academic coursework must be taken at an accredited college or university and must be documented on a certified transcript, even if it is audited.
  • No more than 45 of the 50 continuing education units may be counted in this area for CPP.
  • No more than 20 of the 25 continuing education units may be counted in this area for QPP.
  • Course work must be directly related to ATOD prevention to be counted for CEU Credit.
For regular (graded) academic coursework completed:
1 semester credit = 15 hrs 2 semester credits = 30 hrs 3 semester credits = 45 hrs
1 trimester credit = 14 hrs 2 trimester credits = 28 hrs 3 trimester credits = 42 hrs
1 quarter credit = 10 hrs 2 quarter credits = 20 hrs 3 quarter credits = 30 hrs
For audited (not graded) coursework completed:
1 semester credit = 8 hrs 2 semester credits = 16 hrs 3 semester credits = 24 hrs
1 trimester credit = 7 hrs 2 trimester credits = 14 hrs 3 trimester credits = 21 hrs
1 quarter credit = 5 hrs 2 quarter credits = 10 hrs 3 quarter credits = 15 hrs

Professional Presentations

  • No more than half of the required continuing education units may be counted in this area.
  • Presentations must be directly related to ATOD prevention, Youth Development, Coalition Building, and or Leadership Development and must have stated learning objectives.
  • Presentations need to be documented in a brochure or flyer by the sponsoring organization.
  • Credit will not be given for repeat or multiple delivery of the same presentation/lecture.
  • Co-presenters must divide the hours of the presentation for CEU credit.
  • Presentations made at professional conferences, workshops or programs: 60 minutes of lecture = 2 hours of credit.

Repeat the following required courses for CPP/QPP

  • (This option would satisfy all of the CEU requirements for a CPP or QPP.)
  • Principles of Drug Abuse Prevention (PDAP)
  • Cultural Competency
  • Ethics

Professional Experience

  • A minimum of 2000 clock hours of ATOD prevention work during the last 3 years is required for re-certification as a CPP.
  • A minimum of 600 clock hours of ATOD prevention work during the last 3 years is required for re-certification as a QPP.
